The problem seems to be with the Port Replicator itself - the one supplied by Dell - and given the amount of grief that others have been having witgh Port Replicators on Inspiron targus usb 2.0 port replicator I tend to think that it's Dell who hasn't done their research in recommending this device to buyers. I was able to solve one problem: Locking-up on startup with the Port Replicator device attached was solved by downloading the BIOS upgrade.
